Solidarity as the artist's mission statement

There is a certain kind of poverty that lies beyond the absence of material things and whose existence is more harmful than many of the other evils ailing our society. Its detriment lies on the ease with which we allow it to take hold of our lives, failing to acknowledge its existence. It is the poverty of disdain towards violence, injustice, and intolerance. It is the kind of poverty that cannot be seen through the naked eye, yet affects

all of us. And it is also unjustifiable.

As individuals living in a society that is growing more and more alienated, we have forgotten our duties to society. Among these duties, the duty of not turning a blind eye towards the pain and suffering of others is a moral imperative. We must act with solidarity.

More importantly, we must remember our duty to answer those calls for aid constantly lost between the gaps that we have created among classes, those that separate "us" from "them". We must awaken from the lethargic trance we have chosen to live in. We must share in both words and actions the responsibility to help our brothers because we have all suffered once before the pain of hopelessness and despair. We all have the right to dream of a brighter tomorrow.

La solidaridad como misión

Existe una pobreza que va más allá de la carencia de bienes materiales y cuya existencia es mucho más perniciosa que muchos de los otros males que aquejan a nuestra sociedad. Su detrimento estriba en la facilidad con la cual podemos permitir que se apodere de nuestro diario vivir, haciendo caso omiso de su existencia. Es la pobreza del desdén ante la violencia, la injusticia y la intolerancia. Es la pobreza que no se ve, pero que nos arropa a todos. Y es también una pobreza injustificable.

Como individuos dentro de una sociedad cada día más enajenada hemos olvidado nuestros deberes dentro de esta sociedad. Apremiante es el deber de no hacernos de la vista larga ante el dolor del prójimo, el cual no tiene por qué ser ajeno. Debemos ser solidarios.

Más importante aún es el deber de responder con acciones a los llamados de ayuda que constantemente se pierden entre la separación de clases y el distanciamiento entre "ellos" y "nosotros". Debemos despertar del auto-impuesto letargo en el que vivimos. Debemos compartir en palabra y acción la responsabilidad de auxiliar al hermano caído porque todos hemos sido hijos de la desesperanza alguna vez. Todos tenemos derecho a un mejor mañana.
